Breastfeeding Education and Support
According to facts created by WomensHealth.gov, breastfeeding is normal and healthy for infants and moms. Breastmilk has hormones and disease-fighting cells called antibodies that help protect infants from germs and illness. This protection is unique and changes to meet your baby’s needs. Some reasons to breastfeed are:
• Breastfeeding offers essential nutrients and a nutritionally balanced meal.
• Breastmilk is easy to digest.
• Breastmilk fights disease.
Our Breastfeeding Goal
The Natural Way Birthing Project’s goal is to help minimize the staggering infant mortality issue in this local area. Breastfeeding, with its many known health benefits for infants, children, and mothers, is a key strategy to accomplish this goal. Based on Center for Disease Control findings, in the state of Texas, over 78% of mothers reported initiating breastfeeding, but less than half (38%), were exclusively breastfeeding by 3 months and less than one quarter (16%) of them were exclusively breastfeeding at 6 months. In order to help assist with the initiation rate amongst our families, we are committed to providing the necessary support to assist moms with a positive breastfeeding experience from the beginning and a commitment to encourage her goals for long-term feeding success.
What We Offer
The Natural Way Birthing Project will offer the breastfeeding education and support through our peer counselor network and our social support gathering, the “Chocolate Milk and Cookies Club.” If a mother needs additional support with breastfeeding concerns, she can contact us at 817-841-9291 and speak directly with a peer counselor and/or a Certified Lactation Consultant or schedule a home visit.
There are also efforts to provide a FREE quarterly educational workshop: proper latch, nutrition for breastfeeding, risk factors of formula feeding and much more. Also, we will provide a safe space for nursing mothers to gather and socialize as they bond with their babies and women in the community who are also breastfeeding. Please check our calendar for location, date and time of the workshop.
